Perhaps you’ve used the same garden hose for several years and find it’s time to buy a new one. This leaves the problem of what to do with an old hose. I didn’t have any immediate ideas either, or even how to discard it, but after looking online and giving it some thought, I’m finding lots of ways to upcycle or repurpose a garden hose.

Ways to Reuse Garden Hoses

The first thought of alternative uses for an old hose is to use it in a similar situation as before. Add some holes with a small drill bit and turn it into a soaker hose for your garden. Connect one end to the faucet and add a hose cap on the other end. Gardeners have also used pieces of the hose with holes in containers to use for gentle watering access to the roots.

Some creative minds go even further than that and upcycle hose parts into:

  • Doormats
  • Garden edging
  • Area rugs (especially good around the pool)
  • Saw blade covers
  • Handle covers for yard tools
  • Bucket handle covers
  • Door stops
  • Bird cages

Additional Garden Hose Alternative Uses

Some uses for an old garden hose include weaving it into a base for a chair, bench, or bunk bottom. You may think of ways to use an upcycled garden hose as protection for plants, shrubs, and trees from weed eaters and other mechanical lawn tools. Some use garden hose pieces for staking a tree.

Other ideas for using an old hose are putting it on the wall to hang tools or use a short part of the old hose to trap earwig pests in the garden.

Give it some thought the next time your hose wears out. You might be surprised at the innovative thoughts that come to mind. You’re only limited by your imagination!
