Gardening Know How believes an education that begins in the garden can last a lifetime, promoting healthier lifestyles and a number of other benefits. This is just one of the reasons why we began our school and community garden sponsorship program. We are pleased to be a part of the Bedford Community Garden project, which was recently recognized in the University Hospital newsletter "Green In-Between," for their work towards making their community a healthier, greener place while helping bring awareness to environmental issues. Below is an excerpt from the "Green In-Between" newsletter.
Green In-Between - First Quarter 2017 - University Hospital In 2017, Cleveland and its surrounding neighborhoods are celebrating the year of Vibrant Green Space, part of the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 initiative to bring awareness to environmental issues affecting our region and create a thriving and resilient community network that leverages its wealth of assets to build economic, social and environmental well-being for all. Members of UH Bedford Medical Center are doing just that by participating in the local Bedford Community Garden. Imagine, emerald green vines bursting with juicy red tomatoes, yard long green beans, broccoli bouquets and bright yellow squash meandering through the garden. That my friend is only part of the wonder Bedford Community Garden has to offer. Boasting 42 plots, a small apple orchard, and a few raised beds, this garden thrives on diversity. Our members range from families residing in the City of Bedford to members of UH Bedford Medical Center's Age Well Be Well Club, various community groups and students from Central Primary School. This spring, UH Bedford's Diabetes Support Group will join us, not only will they be planting healthy fresh vegetables of their own, but they will also conduct their monthly educational meetings at the garden, with the assistance of a Master Gardener who was trained through the OSU extension Master Gardener Program. The garden has been awarded a grant from GardeningKnowHow.com to be used for more raised beds which will be built by local high school students as part of the "Space Maker" class. These taller beds will better serve our senior population, as well as the members of the Diabetes Support Group.
