Incorporating various types of daisies into the ornamental garden is an easy way to add a vibrant burst of color to the landscape. In using only common names, however, confusion among gardeners can feel frustrating. Frequently, the common name “African Daisy,” is used to refer to several different genus and species of flowering plants. Arctotis African daisies are just one example of this.

These brightly colored and carefree flowers can add appeal to ornamental beds or be used in attractive mass plantings. Learning more about growing Arctotis daisies is an excellent way for landscapers and home gardeners to determine when to plant, and what Arctotis daisy care will be required.

What are Arctotis Daisies?

Native to South Africa, these plants produce unique silver colored foliage. Large, daisy shaped blooms begin to appear early in the growing season on 2 foot (60 cm.) tall plants. In regions where the conditions are ideal, these flowers will continue to bloom throughout the entire growing season. Arctotis plants growing in regions with especially warm summer temperatures may go dormant during the hottest portion of the season as a means of survival, and then resume their bloom with the arrival of cooler temperatures at the end of summer, as well as in the fall.

Growing Arctotis Daisies

The manner in which gardeners grow Arctotis daisies depends greatly upon their growing zone. This plant behaves as a perennial throughout USDA growing zones 9-11. However, those living outside of these regions will be able to grow the flowers in landscape borders by treating the plant as an annual.

Arctotis African daisies will grow best when planted from seed. Newly hybridized varieties of these daisies offer us the choice of a wide range of highly ornamental colors.

Before planting, you should choose a well-draining location that receives direct sunlight. Arctotis daisy flowers are highly adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, which includes poor fertility. This, in addition to their ability to withstand long periods of drought, makes them ideal for growing in rock gardens or in sandy soils.

Arctotis daisy care is minimal. However, the plants benefit from consistent deadheading in order to promote continued blooming.
